Wild Woods Farm
Source for native and medicinal plants for southeastern Virginia
Wild Woods Farm is an 11-acre native nursery located in northeastern North Carolina with its headquarters in the Blackwater section of Virginia Beach. The nursery has been providing plants, products, and education for maintaining health and wellness since 2009 when it was certified by the state of North Carolina.
At Wild Woods Farm, the focus is on the plants. We grow plants that are native to coastal Virginia as well as cultivated medicinal herbs. Products are developed from native and medicinal herbs that are grown and harvested here on the farm, including teas, vinegars, and salves. Most importantly, we teach people about plants, how to identify them, grow them, and use them. We also include harvesting and processing tips, as well as their health benefits.
The farm is open to visitors by appointment only. Email wildfood@cox.net to schedule a time.

Yaupon Holly is a member of the holly family with evergreen leaves and waxy, red berries that ripen just in time for the December holiday season. The leaves are sustainably harvested, dried, and roasted to make a stimulating tea that contains caffeine, theobromine, and antioxidants.
Yaupon is available from Wild Woods Farm in loose leaf, dried and roasted, by the pound, in 3-oz. bags, or as sampler tea bags. It is also available by the pound unroasted.

Cleavers, Bedstraw – February 5, 2021
The arrival of spring brings with it a sudden burst of growth from the plant world. A common herb that catches your attention is cleavers, also known as bedstraw, an introduced annual. The herb literally reaches out and grabs onto you as you pass by. Leaves and stems are both covered in small, fibrous hairs with tiny hooks on the end, enabling it to stick to clothing and other objects. Cleavers is also one of the few wild greens that has leaves in whorls with six to eight slender leaves forming a circle around the square stem. Tiny, white flowers with four petals appear in the spring in the leaf axils followed by tiny, bristly fruits........click here to read more!
Mosses are primitive plants that form a green carpet on the forest floor. They belong to a group of plants called bryophytes that lack true roots. Instead, they have rhizoids that serve as a holdfast for the plant. Instead of flowers, fruits, or seeds, they have spores for reproducing and also spread vegetatively. They grow in shady, moist soil and are dependent on water to make food and for fertilization. When they are dry, they fold their leaves or curl them up to prevent evaporation of water.

Peat moss is probably one of the most popular mosses and is often used by gardeners to wrap the roots of plants to keep them moist until they can be planted. It is also antiseptic and absorbs water and was used for bandages during WWI. Mosses can also be a source of water in a survival situation and for filtration. They are waterproof and can be used to cover a shelter and for erosion control. Mosses are healing in that they can calm your spirit and provide a soft mat to walk across, massaging the feet in the process.
