Diggin’ for Roots

While many plants are sleeping above the ground, beneath the surface roots are growing. As long as the ground is above freezing and before they send up new growth, roots can be dug. Evening primrose, dandelions, groundnuts, and more will be identified and harvested.

For All Ages

There are a number of opportunities to explore backyards, swamps, marshes, and forests and become familiar with the plants and animals that live there. Programs promote getting outdoors and connecting with nature while developing skills for being outdoors.

Foraging – identify, gather and prepare wild plants to use for food and medicine.

Green Farmacy – Learn to make lotions, potions, oils, and salves for health and wellness.

Wilderness Survival Skills – develop basic survival skills for being outdoors, including food, water, shelter, firemaking, tracking, and more;

Wetland Wildlife – explore ocean and bay waters to discover the plants and animals that live there.

Customized tours can be scheduled to accommodate groups or individuals. Rates vary depending on group size and needs.

Monthly programs are offered on identifying and harvesting wild edible and medicinal plants. Plants have cycles and follow the seasons. The foraging events will focus on what is in season and how to process and preserve them. Samples will be available for tasting.

Tour the gardens, fields, meadows, and forest edges at Wild Woods Farm and identify native edible and medicinal plants of southeast Virginia. Find out how these plants can contribute to your health and well-being. Taste samples of dishes prepared from wild plants.

Health and Wellness Consultations - now available

Vicki Ransom, RN, MS, Clinical Herbalist has teamed up with Vickie Shufer, MS, Therapeutic Herbalist to offer individuals an opportunity to improve their overall health and prevent illness before it happens. This may involve recommendations for changes in diet, lifestyle or herbal supplements for your diet.

Consultations are available by phone, email, or skype to assess the individual’s needs and preferences. There is no fee for the initial 10-minute consultation. After that, the fee is $80/hour.
